Slope Stabilization
Vetiver Grass: The Ultimate Bio-Engineering Tool for Slope Stabilization
Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), when implemented according to the Vetiver System (VS), is a sustainable, green, and cost-effective solution for stabilizing sloping land and protecting road embankments. As a proven bio-engineering tool, it offers a “living” alternative to traditional hard engineering.
Why the Vetiver System Works
Unlike common turf grasses with shallow, horizontal roots, the Vetiver Grass root system is a marvel of nature. It creates a dense, underground web that acts as a natural anchor for vulnerable landscapes.
Key Technical Specifications
- Vertical Growth: Roots grow straight down rather than spreading horizontally, reaching depths of up to 10 feet (3 meters).
- Reinforcement Strength: The roots possess a tensile strength equivalent to 1/6 of mild steel reinforcement, providing mechanical soil binding.
- Hardiness: Vetiver thrives in a wide range of soil conditions and can penetrate even the toughest, most compacted substrates.
- Erosion Control: By reinforcing the soil structure from within, it effectively prevents landslides and surface erosion.
