Landslide Prevention & Land Rehabilitation: Sustainable Slope Mitigation

The Vetiver System (VS) is a globally recognized, cost-effective alternative to traditional heavy engineering for land rehabilitation. While highly effective as a restorative tool, the system delivers its greatest value when implemented preventatively – stabilizing slopes before a catastrophic failure occurs.

Technical Mechanism: Strengthening the Slip Surface

For slopes prone to movement, the primary goal is to increase the soil’s shear strength. Vetiver Grass achieves this through its extraordinary vertical root architecture:

  • Deep Penetration: The fibrous roots penetrate up to 3 meters (10 feet) deep, effectively “pinning” the soil layers together.
  • Surpassing the Slip Surface: In most shallow-to-medium landslides (less than 3m deep), the roots grow past the failure plane (slip surface), anchoring the unstable topsoil to the stable substrate below.
  • 40% Stability Increase: Studies have proven that a well-established Vetiver System can increase overall slope stability by up to 40%, creating a naturally reinforced soil structure.

Rehabilitation After Major Landslides

When a major landslide has already occurred, the Vetiver System plays a vital role in the long-term stabilization and “healing” of the landscape. However, for severe or deep-seated failures, we recommend a Hybrid Bio-Engineering Design.

In these complex cases, VS is integrated with traditional geotechnical methods such as:

  1. Geotextiles & Erosion Blankets: For immediate surface protection.
  2. Gabion Baskets & Retaining Walls: For structural toe support.
  3. Check Dams: To manage water energy in new gully formations.

By combining the immediate structural support of “hard” engineering with the long-term, self-maintaining reinforcement of the Vetiver System, you ensure maximum site resilience and lower maintenance costs.
