Infrastructure Protection

Infrastructure Protection: Enhancing Asset Longevity with Vetiver Bio-Engineering.

Traditional concrete infrastructure often fails not because of the concrete itself, but because of the instability of the surrounding soil.

Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) provides a biological reinforcement layer that protects the critical soil-concrete interface. By utilizing a vertical, non-invasive root system, the Vetiver System (VS) secures the ground without damaging the very structures it is designed to protect.

Critical Protection for Engineered Structures

Where soil meets concrete, erosion is a constant threat. Vetiver Grass acts as a “living anchor” in high-risk zones, including:

  • Road Shoulders & Embankments: Preventing edge-cracking and shoulder washouts.
  • Drainage Channels & Culverts: Protecting against scouring and hydraulic undercutting.
  • Bridge Abutments: Securing the approach soil to prevent structural shifts.
  • Retaining Walls: Reducing hydrostatic pressure and preventing soil loss at the footings.
  • Riverbanks: Stabilizing banks to protect adjacent infrastructure from fluvial erosion.

The “Vertical Advantage”

Unlike many woody plants or trees, Vetiver roots grow vertically (up to 10ft deep) rather than laterally. This is a vital distinction for infrastructure:

  1. Non-Invasive: Roots will not heave pavement or crack concrete pipes.
  2. Subsurface Reinforcement: The roots bind the soil into a dense, reinforced mass that resists “washout” during extreme weather.
  3. Climate Resilience: By keeping the soil intact, VS significantly extends the service life of public and private assets, reducing long-term maintenance cost.
