Erosion & Sediment Control

Erosion and Sediment Control: Managing Stormwater with Vetiver Hedgerows

During high rainfall events, unmanaged surface water gains velocity, leading to severe soil erosion. As flow volumes increase, this runoff can cause devastating damage to private property, public infrastructure, and natural landscapes.

The Vetiver System (VS) provides a biological barrier that mitigates these risks by managing water at the source.

How Vetiver Hedgerows Prevent Erosion

When vetiver plants are installed in horizontal rows along the natural contour of the land, they form a continuous, dense living fence. This “hedgerow effect” manages runoff through three primary mechanisms:

  • Velocity Dissipation: Surface runoff is forced to slow down as it meets the thick vetiver leaves.
  • Natural Percolation: By slowing the water, the hedgerow encourages runoff to spread across the contour and soak (percolate) into the ground rather than rushing downhill.
  • Mechanical Soil Binding: Below the surface, the deep, fibrous root system anchors loose dirt, securing the soil structure against hydraulic pressure.

Topsoil Recovery and Sediment Capture

Beyond prevention, Vetiver Grass actively “repairs” the landscape. As sediment-heavy water passes through the hedge, the topsoil is filtered out and deposited behind the plants. Over time, this creates natural terracing, effectively filling in small-scale erosion gullies.

Solutions for Severe Gully Repair

For major land degradation or severe gullying, the Vetiver System is most effective when integrated with traditional engineering. We recommend a hybrid bio-engineering approach combining VS with:

  1. Check Dams: To reduce immediate water energy.
  2. Gabion Baskets: For structural heavy-duty support.
  3. Earthworks: Terra-reformation to prepare the site for long-term vegetative stabilization.
