Right of Way
The BP Right of Way (ROW) project, also referenced in our documents as the BP Ocelot Project in Guayaguarare, stands as a prime example of successful, sustainable environmental engineering.
This long-term maintenance initiative, commissioned by BP Trinidad and Tobago, was specifically designed to implement robust slope stabilization, erosion and sedimentation control, and comprehensive surface drainage recommendations across the project site. The primary goal was to protect the integrity of the land, particularly in areas with steep slopes and where new pipeline infrastructure was located.
The cornerstone of this maintenance strategy is the utilization of cost-effective and highly sustainable Best Management Practices (BMPs). Our involvement includes ongoing maintenance contracts that center on the proven Vetiver System (VS) for bioengineering and ecological slope stabilization. The Vetiver TT team is responsible for essential maintenance services, including drainage servicing, strategic re-fertilization, control of vegetation overgrowth, and the replacement of Vetiver plants as needed. This approach is critical, as effective surface water management is key to minimizing soil oversaturation, reducing the formation of dangerous gullies, and ultimately lowering the risk of catastrophic slope failure.
Beyond the core application of the Vetiver System by Vetiver TT, the project evaluates and implements a variety of complementary erosion control and water conveyance solutions. These sustainable solutions include the deployment of erosion control blankets, such as coconut matting, alongside surface water management BMPs. These include constructing geotextile-lined earthen channels and poly/geotextile-lined drains, installing rock and live-stake wooden check dams, and employing rip-rap channel lining, wattles, or coco logs/rolls. A complex water conveyance drop structure combination is also used to safely manage concentrated water flow down the slope. This comprehensive, multi-faceted approach showcases the dedication of all involved to long-term environmental protection and infrastructure stability.
